Sulabh Shauchalaya
Sulabh Shauchalaya is a social organization that aims to improve sanitation and hygiene across India by providing affordable and accessible public toilets. Founded in 1970 by Dr. Bindeshwar Pathak, Sulabh has been a pioneer in addressing the country's sanitation challenges, particularly in rural and underserved urban areas.
The organization’s mission is to promote cleanliness, hygiene, and the dignity of individuals through the construction and management of public toilets. By focusing on providing low-cost, clean, and easily accessible facilities, Sulabh has played a key role in improving public health, especially in areas where open defecation was widespread. The organization has built over 1.3 million household and public toilets across India.
Sulabh Shauchalaya’s work goes beyond providing toilets, as it also engages in educational campaigns to raise awareness about sanitation and hygiene. It has developed a unique biogas-based toilet technology, which not only helps in waste management but also generates renewable energy, contributing to environmental sustainability. Additionally, Sulabh is actively involved in promoting gender equality by ensuring that women have access to safe and private sanitation facilities.
Today, Sulabh Shauchalaya is recognized as a leading example of social entrepreneurship in the field of sanitation. Its efforts have significantly contributed to improving public health, fostering dignity, and creating a cleaner and more sustainable environment across India. The organization’s work continues to inspire similar initiatives globally, showcasing how innovation and social impact can address pressing public health challenges.
