Lijjat Papad
Lijjat Papad is a cooperative organization that produces and sells papads, empowering women by providing financial independence and a supportive work environment. Founded in 1959, it aims to uplift women, particularly in rural areas, by offering them opportunities to work, earn, and become self-reliant.
What began with seven women in Mumbai has now grown into one of India’s largest women-led cooperatives, employing over 40,000 women across the country. The cooperative model ensures equal participation in decision-making, with profits shared among all members, fostering a strong sense of community and collective responsibility.
Lijjat Papad's mission focuses on both economic empowerment and social change by providing women with sustainable livelihoods. In addition to papads, it has expanded its product line to include spices, flour, and detergents, all while upholding a commitment to quality, fair wages, and ethical business practices.
Today, Lijjat Papad stands as a symbol of women’s empowerment and cooperative success, inspiring similar initiatives across India. Its impact goes beyond business, demonstrating how collective action and solidarity can drive lasting social and economic transformation.
