Goonj
Goonj is a non-governmental organization (NGO) that addresses critical issues of basic needs and human dignity in underserved communities across India. Founded in 1999 by Anshu Gupta, Goonj focuses on utilizing urban waste material, particularly clothing, to create awareness and support for rural development. Its flagship program, "Clothing for Work," promotes the idea of using clothing as a tool for empowerment, where villagers exchange old clothes for contributions to local development projects. Goonj also works on areas like education, health, and rural infrastructure, using innovative approaches to provide solutions to issues like poverty, lack of basic facilities, and gender inequality. The organization’s approach is unique as it bridges the gap between urban waste and rural needs, turning something discarded into a tool for social change. Goonj’s efforts have significantly improved the lives of thousands of people, ensuring their basic needs are met and helping to foster sustainable community development.
