Innovations for Renewable Energy Solutions: Bio-CNG from Napier Grass


In India, farmers face fluctuating incomes, soil degradation, and growing climate vulnerabilities. Simultaneously, the energy sector remains heavily reliant on fossil fuels, slowing the shift toward sustainable alternatives. Linking agriculture with renewable energy offers an opportunity to strengthen rural livelihoods while reducing environmental impact.


Problem Statement

Agriculture in many regions is dominated by chemical-intensive practices that degrade soil and limit income stability for farmers. Meanwhile, renewable energy adoption is hampered by a lack of community-led, locally sourced solutions. Plastic and other pollutants continue to strain ecosystems, and scalable green energy models remain scarce. There is a pressing need for sustainable income streams for farmers that also support clean energy transitions, reduce emissions, and foster climate resilience.


The Intervention: Bio-CNG from Napier Grass

To address these interconnected challenges, an initiative was launched to test and develop Bio-CNG production from Napier grass — a perennial grass that grows quickly on marginal lands with minimal inputs.

Vineeth (he/him) leads this work from Bangalore, Karnataka.


Key Activities

The following activities have been completed:

  • Conducted a pilot project at a farm in Chinthamani, Karnataka, testing Napier grass as a reliable feedstock for Bio-CNG production

  • Built a small-scale prototype biogas plant to validate the feedstock choice and design approach

  • Initiated mapping of feedstock supply chains with local farmers

  • Identified potential industrial off-takers for Bio-CNG

  • Began exploring market opportunities for byproducts such as compost, slurry, and CO₂


Vineeth's Approach

The effectiveness of this initiative lies in how the work is structured. Vineeth's approach includes:

  • Starting with a pilot rather than scaling prematurely — testing feedstock reliability at a farm in Chinthamani before expanding

  • Building a small-scale prototype to validate technical design before committing larger resources

  • Mapping supply chains with local farmers first — understanding what is available and reliable

  • Identifying industrial off-takers early, ensuring there is demand before production scales

  • Exploring byproduct markets (compost, slurry, CO₂) to maximize economic viability from the start

  • Securing external support through the beVisioneers Fellowship for mentorship, resources, and a global network


Outcomes

The following outcomes have been demonstrated:

  • Technical feasibility of using Napier grass for Bio-CNG production has been established

  • Groundwork for linking rural farming with green energy markets has been completed

  • Vineeth was selected for the beVisioneers Fellowship, receiving mentorship, resources, and a global network to help scale experiments into a full-fledged rural-rooted bioenergy enterprise


Next Steps

The following next steps have been defined:

  • Scale the pilot into a full-fledged rural-rooted bioenergy enterprise

  • Build decentralized plants in partnership with Farmer Producer Organizations (FPOs) and local industries


This initiative demonstrates that agricultural and energy challenges can be addressed together. By testing Napier grass as a feedstock, building a small-scale prototype, mapping supply chains, and identifying off-takers in advance, the project has moved from concept to technical validation. With the support of the beVisioneers Fellowship, the pathway to a decentralized, farmer-linked bioenergy enterprise is now clearly defined.
